Video Transcript – EB1 Green Card – Published Material About You Requirements
In this video, we’ll dive into one of the EB-1 Green Card qualification categories: ‘Published Material About You.’
The official definition for this category is:
(iii) Published material about the alien in professional or major trade publications or other major media, relating to the alien’s work in the field for which classification is sought. Such evidence shall include the title, date, and author of the material, and any necessary translation.
Now, if you remember from our introductory video, we simplified this category to:
(iii) Published Material About You – Can you provide or develop documentation showing that you’ve been written about, by name, in professional or major trade publications or other major media, specifically about your work in your field?
When it comes to EB-1 Green Card applications, having press coverage or being published in a respected journal significantly strengthens your case. The reason is simple: if journalists or media outlets find your work important enough to write about, that boosts your credibility. The more prestigious the publication, the stronger your profile appears to U.S. immigration officials. In fact, many professionals hire publicists whose job is to secure media coverage for them. Immigration officers take media recognition seriously, as it demonstrates your influence in your field.
We understand that many highly skilled professionals don’t naturally seek press coverage, so this category can be tough to satisfy. However, even if you don’t meet this requirement today, there’s nothing stopping you from proactively building media attention around your work.
Let’s break it down by industry to understand what EB-1 Green Card adjudicators are looking for here. If you work in entertainment, you need press mentions in reputable media covering your performances.
For instance, an actor in a stage play might be featured in national newspapers’ arts sections or in trade publications like Variety, The Stage, or Backstage. Musicians might be written about in mainstream media due to their cultural impact or featured in specialized music publications.
Academics and researchers often have their work published, but this category isn’t about research papers. Instead, it focuses on articles about you and your contributions, such as a headline like, “Dr. Mike Smith Develops Breakthrough Treatment for Diabetes.” The article should discuss your background, your work, and why it’s significant.
Finance and advertising professionals often appear in industry-specific publications that highlight their expertise and influence.
One important note: Small, local publications generally don’t carry much weight unless you have multiple articles from different sources, such as when a touring production receives widespread regional media coverage.
In today’s digital world, immigration officers face challenges in determining the credibility of online media. Print publications tend to hold more weight because they involve higher costs and editorial oversight. They also provide circulation numbers and demographic data, which help prove their influence. If a print publication also has an online version, that’s fine. However, purely online outlets vary in credibility. Many websites allow people to upload their own content without editorial oversight, making it difficult for immigration officers to assess their legitimacy. Simply having a large number of views or social media followers isn’t enough.
That being said, some online-only publications have built strong reputations over time. If you’ve been featured in a respected digital publication, we can evaluate its impact and credibility.
If you’re struggling to meet this category, consider working towards media exposure. Talk to a publicist, host an event, or find other ways to generate buzz about your work. Many publications are actively looking for fresh and exciting stories to cover.
If you already have published material, start gathering examples and let us review them. If not, think about ways to start building your presence in the media.
We hope this presentation has helped clarify the ‘Published Material About You’ category. In our next video, we’ll explore the ‘Judging’ category.
