Ok – let’s get into some details about the Budget Blinds Franchise.
About Budget Blinds
Budget Blinds was founded by five entrepreneurs in 1992 and began franchising in 1994. They revolutionized the industry by providing convenient at-home service, professional installation, free in-home consultations and estimates, knowledgeable consultants, expert measuring and quality, name-brand window treatments.
They created a risk-free business model that required no inventory, and no overhead. There are now almost 1,000 Budget Blinds franchises in the United States, and there are new franchise opportunities throughout the country.
Budget Blinds is ranked #55 on the 2015 Entrepreneur.com Franchise 500.
Budget Blinds as an E2 Investment
There are two important considerations for determining whether or not a franchise is a good choice for an E2 investor; 1) does the franchise allow absentee ownership, and 2) will the franchise create enough jobs to qualify with US Immigration?
For Budget Blinds, the answer to both of these questions is, “yes.”
Budget Blinds allows absentee ownership, meaning you can hire and train the right team and then allow them to run the business for you while you enjoy your new life in the US.
A typical Budget Blinds store requires 1-3 employees, you will need to hire two full-time employees in order to meet the requirements for your E2 visa. Make sure you consider this in your overall franchise plan.
Investment Requirements
A typical Budget Blinds franchise will require an upfront investment of $89,240 – $187,070.
Net Worth Requirements
For Budget Blinds you will need to show a net worth of $90,000.
Note: Net worth is basically the value of your assets minus the value of your debts, and franchisors normally require you to show a certain net worth in order to guarantee that you are going to be successful in the business.
Liquidity Requirements
Liquidity is important because it guarantees the franchisor that you will have cash on hand in an emergency.
For a Budget Blinds franchise, you are required to have $60,000 cash on hand.
Note: While a line of credit may be sufficient to meet this requirement, as a new arrival to the US under an E2 visa you may not have immediate access to lines of credit. Make sure you consider this in your overall investment budget.
Training Requirements
You will be required to undergo a two-week comprehensive training program at the company’s headquarters which will prepare you in business administration, office set-up, local area marketing, canvassing, product knowledge, measuring, installation and overcoming sales objections. Owners report that this training allows them to tackle jobs that they would not have thought possible.
Benefits
Along with a risk-free business model that requires no inventory and no overhead, Budget Blinds offers owners: an established brand, newsletters, meetings, toll-free phone lines, internet, purchasing cooperatives, co-op advertising, ad slicks, and millions of dollars in national and regional advertising.
Franchise Fee / Royalty
All franchise owners have to pay a small royalty or commission on the business they generate using the franchise name and business model. In many cases, but not all, you will be required to pay:
- An initial Franchise Fee to become a franchise owner,
- A royalty based on a percentage of the monthly gross of the business; and,
- A franchise fee for any advertising and corporate promotions.
Budget Blinds requires a franchise fee of $14,950.
Budget Blinds does not charge a royalty on your revenues, but they do require a monthly franchise fee. This fee is $300/month for your first six months, and increases in increments after that until it reaches $1,500 starting your third year.
